Buchfink started with a call from the tax office: Simon Micheler's tax adviser had forgotten to file his VAT returns. Many sole traders know the underlying problem. Cash basis accounting, VAT returns and social insurance are built for bookkeepers, receipts pile up, and whatever is missing often only shows up late.
Receipts arrive by photo, email or PDF in one shared inbox. An AI model from Mistral reads date, amount, VAT and counterparty and files the expense in the right category. Uncertain values are flagged, not guessed. The VAT return, the amount payable and the reserves are calculated deterministically, and on request a booking batch in BMD format, receipts included, goes to the tax adviser at the end of every month or quarter.
We use AI where it really helps: reading and classifying receipts. Tax amounts are calculated the classic way, and every figure links back to the original receipt. We take this separation into client projects where the numbers have to be right.
